A Little Life
Nate Berkussource... this month I’ve chosen the 3 books I will NEVER give away. They are: “A Million Little Pieces” by James Frey, “After Visiting Friends” by @MichaelHainey, & “A Little Life” by @YanagiharaHanya
The novel is a pursuit of deep and intensive dissection of friendship, love, and shadows of the past, resonating the follow-up of four college classmates as they undertake transitioning through the obstacles of the realities of adult life. A beautifully told story of trauma, recovery, and the enduring binds settled into our lives, The Other Half offers the reader a deep interrogation of human strength and how much a person can endure.
Shantaram
Nate BerkussourceOnce in a while, a book comes along that I have to recommend to everyone I meet. "Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts is one of those books
This tale sees an escaped Australian convict discovering a new life in the teeming streets of Bombay, where he immerses himself in its underworld society and starts a free health clinic while working for the mob. Along the way, he will find love and betrayal and thus the dynamics of the human spirit. This is a story about redemption and choice, about power and struggle toward inner peace in a world that has almost completely broken down into chaos. It's a story of transformation and the relentless pursuit of freedom, both physically and spiritually.
The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell

The Covenant of Water
Nate BerkussourceAfter reading (and loving) one of his earlier books, Cutting for Stone, I knew I needed to take Oprah’s recommendation on this next one and it was definitely worth the read
Acclaimed novelist Abraham Verghese returns with an epic, multigenerational saga set in southern India. It is centered on the lives of a family that are tied and woven with relationships, love, and loss from tradition, and the perennial human need for connection and community. With his lyrical prose and fully realized characters, Verghese plunges his readers into this often steamy world, where the fates of the people in it seem inextricably bound up with those in the natural world.
The Searcher
Nate BerkussourceIt is a beautifully written page-turner, and one that you need to read
The Warmth of Other Suns
Nate BerkussourceIt’s one of the most comprehensive and fascinating books I’ve ever read. Thank you for this historical masterpiece
The story follows the trail of Bill Browder, at some point the largest foreign investor in Russia and who turned into an outspoken critic of corruption in the Russian government. After his lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was killed in a Russian jail for having exposed a massive tax fraud, Browder's life changes 180 degrees. He has since set himself on a mission to reveal the people who did this, something that has since seen him launch a global crusade for justice. This is a thrilling narrative—bringing together finance, politics, and activism—and thus brilliantly displays the dangerous intersection of money with power in both Russia and on the global stage. It follows Browder's relentless pursuit for human rights and accountability.
Lady in Waiting
Nate BerkussourceAll I can say is that for anyone watching The Crown, this is a must-read
"Lady in Waiting" is an amazing biography, discussing the life of Lady Anne Glenconner being a lady-in-waid to Princess Margaret, and also uncovers the ways by which she found herself coping against the difficulty of being British royalty. What makes Glenconner's firsthand account so compelling is the intimacy with which she writes and the way the reader is almost privy to the behind-the-scenes discussion of the royal family's sacrifices, sorrows, and joys of life in her unique position at the heart of the Windsor family.
I Am Malala
Nate Berkussource3 reads that are especially thought provoking - the perfect way to kick off a new year. In Defense of Food by @michaelpollan, Like the Flowing River by @paulocoelho and I Am Malala by MalalaFund

A Place for Us
Nate BerkussourceWhat a wonderful book! I highly recommend adding this moving novel to the top of your Fall reading list
The debut novel by Fatima Farheen Mirza is an intimate portrait of an Indian-American Muslim family and an impassioned, deceptively simple tale—one that speaks to the very heart of what it means to be alive, to love another, and to live with them. Explore the themes of identity and belonging, love, and forgiveness ensconced in a dense community as the novel traverses perspectives through years.

A blend of history, science, and personal narrative to delight every reader, Bill Bryson's At Home is a singular guide to the history of the domestic space. Weaving a rich history—from ancient to modern times—of everything from breakfast cereal to flush toilets, Bryson shows how our very habits at home—that endless shower, daily cup of tea, and familiar morning newspaper—were really shaped by larger cultural, technological, and social forces. Freshly informing and entertaining, the book offers a new perspective on the spaces and objects we take for granted.

In Defense Of Food
Nate Berkussource3 reads that are especially thought provoking - the perfect way to kick off a new year. In Defense of Food by @michaelpollan, Like the Flowing River by @paulocoelho and I Am Malala by MalalaFund
"In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto" presents an alluring formula that makes this manifest sensible for a return to a traditional, whole-food diet in the face of the industrialized, highly processed modern diet. Based on scientific study and cultural history, Pollan argues that it is only this way of thinking about "food" as opposed to "nutrients" that preserves health. This pragmatic, dynamic guide will equip readers with conscientious, sustainable food decisions that ensure quality, enjoyment, and the pleasure of having made the dining experience possible.
Astor
Nate BerkussourceI highly recommend adding this read to your shelf if you are as fascinated by these legacy families as much as I am!
In this epic biography, an eminent journalist and a celebrated historian detail the rise, fall, and reinvention of one of the richest and most powerful family dynasties in America. The Astors: An American Dynasty is an epic, multi-generational television family saga of one of America's wealthiest and philanthropic families, their unquenchable ambition, power lust, and human costs that legendary wealth exacts.

A children's fantasy series from Tracey Hecht, "Nocturnals" presents a group of friends leading through the curious Nocturnal Forest, including Dawn the Fox, Tobin the Pangolin, and Bismark the Sugar Glider.
